Norton Building LEED Certified

Krebs Architecture & Engineering, Inc. (Krebs) is pleased to announce that Snead State Community College is receiving their first LEED® Certification for renovations to the Norton Building.  Originally built in 1939 as the first library on Sand Mountain, the 2011 renovation of the Norton Building repurposed the historic structure as a new classroom building.

Designed by Krebs, the project employs materials high in recycled content and utilizes new, high-performance mechanical and plumbing systems to save energy and water. The use of sustainable interior materials and finishes promotes healthier indoor air quality for building occupants. During construction, approximately 95% of demolition debris and construction waste was recycled. The landscaping design incorporates 100% native plant species which eliminates the need for irrigation. To minimize the project’s “carbon footprint”, all construction materials were sourced from manufacturers within a distance of 500 miles from the site.

About LEED®: LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification program is a national rating system for buildings designed, constructed and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. LEED emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.
